Code word?

I love the article in Runners World about Sara! I think there are many principles that can be applied to everyone's running. I am someone who when a race or workout gets tough...I talk to myself and encourage myself to finish! When I was younger I used to tell myself "You have to want it to win it, and I want it more!" So when I read about her one word that she says to herself during a difficult time in training...and then her body responds to it during the race...I immediately decided that was a concept that would work for me. I am not creative and so I just use the word "fight"....which I believe is the same word she uses!

Do you talk to yourself at difficult times?
or
Do you have a code word that helps you push through tough moments?

  1. I definitely talk to myself in races, encouraging myself to push harder, push through to the end. Dunno if it helps or not, but I feel like it's necessary!

  2. I definitely talk to myself A LOT. When things get difficult, when I'm anxious, when I'm upset or disappointed...it's my number one go-to technique!! :)

  3. I talk to myself, its usually not pleasant nor suitable most people ears in a race when I am suffering. I agree with MizzZIppy, I dunno if it helps or not, but it keeps me going.

  4. I'm thinking that my "code" words I use to push through tough moments might not be exactly appropriate for a "family" blog, if you know what I mean... :)

Actually have shouted/barked/grunted "come on" to myself during races when I'm really starting to feel like I want to quit... seems like it helps (though I'm not sure if I what to know what the people around me are thinking when it happens)

  5. ha! I usually just count 1,2,3,4. If I am feeling particularly ambitious I might use "I'm a runner" or "I can do this"...

  6. Lately I have been doing a lot of talking to myself to try and push myself a little farther for each run. I don't have a mantra or anything- just whatever works "keep going", "almost done", and sometimes I will count beats to music just to keep myself distracted.

  7. I love the idea of one word being a trigger. I talk to myself, so I'll have to think of a word so I don't look like I'm having a conversation with ms. invisible. :-)

  8. I talk to myself and tell myself how much this will help in a race. Then in a race i remind myself how it felt in training. Usually works for me.

  9. I mantra ... "If i do the best with what I have then I have won MY race." Got me through Ironman Canada and three weeks prior my dad was in a near fatal accident - no training!! I had to work with what I had and i won that race for my dad!! :)

  10. Yes, I talk to myself and think random thoughts like....suck it up buttercup! I also tell myself to toughen up and stop being a baby:) Just keep your feet moving, breathing regulated and stay positive...that usually works the best! Logic works for me:)

  11. "Remember" was my teams word at nationals so we would whisper "remember" as we ran by each other. We had a long talk about what "remember" meant to each of us the night before. It really helped us out and we WON nationals super cool day.

  13. I talk to myself a lot. If it gets really difficult I use the mantra "run tall, walk tall", the name of my blog.

  14. Hi, Sherri!

I liked that article alot, too. I definitely talk to myself when I run. Although, for me, it's more like I focus on certain concepts instead of words. In daily runs, I'll always have a proprioceptive cue I focus on- something that will help improve my form. Like "navel to spine" or "pulling through".

When things get tough, I remind myself to "say Yes to the misery". Sounds morbid, but it reminds me to accept the pain. Accepting the pain is the price of going faster.

    Have a great day, Sherrie!

  15. I talk to myself a lot too. There isn't just one thing that will bring me through. I actually find thinking of something else and distracting myself helps...next thing I know I'm running again well and don't know how/what I did.
